30 Day Song Challenge, Day 13

Day 13: A song that is a guilty pleasure

I know this song mostly from No More Heroes, a game I got cheap in 2008, just after moving into my current flat. I had no internet at the time, and I was on my own for the first month or so, so I would spend nights playing No More Heroes on the Wii, and I became fascinated with this silly slice of J-pop. It’s sickly sweet and kind of silly, but charming all the same. It’s a catchy melody. Especially when you’re kind of going a little insane from spending too much time on your own…

Genki Rockets is a conceptual pop music/multimedia project by Tetsuya Mizuguchi who is a fairly prominent Japanese game designer who seems obsessed with merging vision, sound and play, with a healthy dose of Japanese weirdness (see his classics Space Channel 5, Rez, Lumines). In fact, he’s working on Child of Eden now, which crosses over with the fiction of Genki Rockets.

By the way, I don’t really like any other Genki Rockets songs. Just this one.

  1. My word, that really is not my cup of tea. Sounds like something my little sister would absolutely blast through the wall, followed by her usual combination of Abba and The Beegees.

The video reminds me of A-ha, Take on Me though.
