30 Day Song Challenge, Day 21

Day 21: A Song You Listen to When You Are Happy

I struggled with this for a while, but I ended up on a little song called In Mind, by a little band called Do Make Say Think. There’s a soundcloud version of it through Constellation themselves, but this video is really great. Can’t go wrong with stop motion teddy bears and a cute girl. Enjoy.

When I’m genuinely happy, which isn’t especially often. I like to reflect on the positive things in life, and one of those things is friendship, family, all that good stuff. This is a song about exactly that, and a song from a band who really don’t write “songs” that often. Do Make Say Think tend towards a kind of jazzier variant of Canadian post-rock. While Godspeed and others lament the decaying world around us, DMST choose to celebrate our habitats and habits. Their music is human and organic and reaches out into the unknown with a sense of optimism and joy that’s quite refreshing for the genre, and especially for the weary ears of listeners.

In Mind, the final track on their sublime 2007 release You, You’re A History in Rust, is one of the rare DMST songs to feature sung lyrics. Not only that, but these lyrics are a fairly concise and powerful mantra. On paper it’s bittersweet reflection of life, death, and companionship, but in the context of the song, it’s a euphoric affirmation of those things.

Instrumentally you’ve got all the finger-picked guitars, dual drumming, horns, keyboards and background swirling electronics you might expect from DMST. There’s also some banjo and other spices in the mix. The track builds melodically for several minutes, then explodes into a super-fuzzed out freak-out that I think is pretty swell. It’s at this point that the aforementioned vocal moment finally hits.

When you die,
You’ll have to leave them behind,
You should keep that in mind,
If you keep that in mind, you’ll find,
A love as big as the sky

Nice huh?

It’s nice to be happy. But failing that listening to Do Make Say Think is pretty good in general.
