I know I don’t have a lot of readers here, but man, you should totally help out Toby Driver, of maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Tartar Lamb and various other musical activities, record and release his latest musical endeavour. The whole issue of making music professionally these days is complex considering most people who listen to music have ceased to consider music as being of any financial value. Grass-roots funding campaigns like this have worked for a number of bands (notably Marillion, who it should be noted I do not like at all) and bring the fans and the musicians closer to a patronage system, which is all pretty swell. Like what they do? Help them do it some more.
If you don’t know about Tartar Lamb, that’s reasonable. However, you should at least know about Kayo Dot and maudlin of the Well, and specifically how they constantly evolve and progress. Their music unfolds in breathtaking and adventurous ways, thematically exciting, emotional, ambiguous, specific, big, small, loud, quiet… Don’t believe me? Well, hey, why don’t you go and stream or download the latest maudlin of the Well release for free? Guess how hey funded this incredibly awesome album? That’s right folks, donations from generous fans. This was my favourite album of last year, and Kayo Dot‘s latest, “Coyote” just dropped last month, a spellbinding and hauntingly psychedelic melodrama of gothic fusion jazz RIO prog something-or-other.
Anyway, here’s the link, if anyone cares to invest in this. The system is simple. You donate, they make the record, they send you the record (and various other goodies if you feel like pledging more money).
