Top 10 Albums Shortlist 2009

For personal reference more than anything else, here’s all the 2009 albums I bought this year, in no particular order. Will edit if I forget any or purchase any more.

  • Vic Chesnutt – At the Cut
  • Do Make Say Think – Other Truths
  • Sunn O))) – Monoliths & Dimensions
  • Isis – Wavering Radiant
  • Flaming Lips – Embryonic
  • Khanate – Clean Hands Go Foul
  • Porcupine Tree – The Incident
  • Bass Communion – Chiaroscuro
  • Big Business – Mind the Drift
  • Crippled Black Phoenix – Ressurectionists/Night Raider
  • Land of Kush – Against the Day
  • Æthenor – Faking Gold & Murder
  • Years – Years
  • GREYMACHINE – Disconnected
  • Dälek – Gutter Tactics
  • Akron/Family – Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free
  • The Mars Volta – Octahedron
  • Secret Chiefs 3: Traditionalists – Le Mani Destre Recise Degli Ultimo Uomini
  • Nadja – When I See the Sun Always Shines on TV
  • Melvins – Chicken Switch
  • maudlin of the Well – Part the Second
  • Jesu – Infinity
  • Eagle Twin – The Unkindness of Crows
  • Dinosaur Jr. – Farm

Of this list, I expect maudlin of the Well, Sunn O))), Big Business, Akron/Family and Khanate to place highly, although the actual best thing I bought this year was quite probably the 5CD Steve Reich set Phases, which astonished me almost to the point of actual tears. Still, it’s been a really fantastic year musically, with much more stuff of interest to me than last year. Let’s hope the new Pelican is as cool as people say it is. Oh, and the BSG Season 4 Soundtrack, which I will pick up when it stops costing £30…
