Day 10: A Song That Makes You Fall Asleep
I have fallen asleep to music plenty of times, but there’s not much in the way of music that makes me fall asleep.
Frédéric Chopin is well known for his piano works, which are generally very pretty, if a little fanciful and flowery at times. While I do love to Show some Pan every now and then, I rather prefer Erik Satie’s slower, slightly clunkier approach to piano composition. His works are deliberate and melodic, and generally avoid flourish. The Gymnopédies are quite a nice thing to fall asleep to for this reason.
It prefigures minimalist piano works by Glass and Nyman, and the ambient work of Eno. There is remarkable economy in every note, sweet, simple sad and gentle. Notes are held and ring out slowly into the ether, an effect that I always in enjoy in music.
