Day 23: A Song That You Want to Play at Your Wedding
I had two options really. I picked this one for a simple reason: it’s kind of how I feel about love – that while it’s a big thing, it’s also a small thing, a mundane everyday thing.
That’s right, it’s This Must Be the Place by Talking Heads. I chose to post the performance from their sublime concert film Stop Making Sense.
Now as I say, this song, as most of Talking Heads’ songs do, takes a sideways look at things. David Byrne has a unique way of seeing the world, our overlapping environs; social, urban, architecture, interest, passion… This song is about love. But it’s not about the fairy-tale version of love we are presented with by the media, and especially by pop music. Instead it’s about the feeling of being in love and being loved back. It’s about the little moments as much as the big ones. It’s not about everything being perfect, but about being in a place where you are happy just to be.
Not that I have a lot of experience in the area, but that’s kind of what I want, and I hope if I ever get married it’s under those circumstances. Call me a hopeless romantic, but I would hope then that the sentiment expressed in this song might serve as a reminder of why we would want to be together in the first place.
